The YMCA Encourages Active Families

The Greater Peoria Family YMCA emphasizes healthy family homes across the Peoria area. Our programs and special events encourage children about the importance of healthy food choices, regular physical activity and strong family relationships. Our programs emphasize the importance of being healthy at home with healthy meals, physical activity and family time.

Our commitment to our mission encourages families to become more active, eat more nutritiously and create stronger bonds by working towards these guidelines:

-- Moderate physical activity three days a week, aim for 20 minutes total on these days and include outdoor activities whenever possible.

-- Participate with your kids in regular physical activities, this provides you with an opportunity to model positive behavior.

-- Serve fruits and vegetables at every snack and meal; off fresh fruit and vegetable options daily.

-- Eat at least one meal a day together, as a family.

-- Involve kids in health snack and meal preparation and clean up every day

-- Make water the primary drink option; other options should be non-sugar sweetened.

-- Provide each child with one to one time every day.

-- Limit screen time to less than two hours per day (television, video games, computer); meals should not be consumed in front of a screen.

-- Much as a bunch- eating together as a family can strengthen your relationships at home and help you learn to be a better friend at school. The family meal is about being together and supporting one another. It’s also a great time to catch up on family news and discuss plans for better health. It’s important to find the time to eat as a group for one meal every day. Planning family meals in advance will help to accommodate busy schedules.

-- AND MOST IMPORTANTLY VISIT THE YMCA TO STAY ON TARGET!!

Grown ups and kids can plan, work and play together. Whether it’s a game of basketball or a group yard work session, it’s a time for both kids and adults to show off their skills in teamwork, good sportsmanship, problem solving and more. It’s also an opportunity to learn about character development: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility are the YMCA’s core values.

The YMCA has Youth Sports Programs, Before and Afterschool Programs, innovative exercise equipment and health education days. For more information please visit our site at www.peoriaymca.org
